Significant changes have been made to both courses for 2011
When the New Forest Marathon and Half Marathon were first conceived in 1981 few motorists used the race route on a Sunday morning. Society has changed since then and now everyone is busy visiting supermarkets, garden centres and DIY stores, main forest roads are now full of traffic from 09:00 am. Motorists seem to have little time spare to give way for runners using the same roads.
Traffic management around the course is a perennial problem and we are always trying to improve the way this is achieved. We are in consultation with the Highways Authority, Local Town Council, Police etc. Each year the situation is reviewed and we are required to make changes to allow our road closure permits to be obtained.
What are the changes from 2010? In an attempt to minimise the bottle-neck around Sway Village part of the course has been reversed. This affects both the Full and Half Marathons.
From the Rising Sun Inn at 2.5 miles the route turns right and follows an anticlockwise course to where the Full and Half Marathons divide at 9.0 miles. The roads covered are unchanged from 2010. Sway village is now 5 miles from the start of the Marathon instead of 5 miles from the end. That means all competitors will be through the village within one hour instead of four to five hours and this should help.
From the divide, the Marathon course is unchanged until rejoining 13.1 miles later at the same point. From there both Full and Half Marathon runners climb steeply from Wootton Bridge back to the Rising Sun Inn and follow last years route to the finish line.

BAAR Gold

As of February 2005 the New Forest Full & Half Marathons have been awarded Gold standard by the British Association of Road Races. The road race grading scheme is designed and administered for UK Athletics by BARR. Gold is the best of three grades and demands the very highest standards of race organisation and provision.
